Biomedical Art and Visualization (BMAV) is the study of art, science, medicine, technology, and the interconnections of these fields. As an interdisciplinary artist, Emerson bridges the gap between seemingly opposing fields, creating strong visuals with scientific accuracy.
Emerson (they/them) grew up surrounded by both science and the arts. With biology professors as grandparents, visual and musical artists as parents, and an entomologist for a brother, Emerson's roots in these fields began the moment they were born. Emerson attends Rowan University, one of a handful of institutions across the United States that offers an undergraduate degree in this highly specialized field. As a BMAV major, Emerson takes a diverse array of courses across academic disciplines including digital 3D modeling, animation, graphic design, biology, and Geographic Information Systems (GIS). In addition to the artistic and biological requirements of the BFA, Emerson is pursuing the John H. Martinson Honors College Concentration, a Certificate of Undergraduate Study in Paleo-Art, and a Certificate of Undergraduate Study in GIS. Following graduation, Emerson plans to attend graduate school for ecology and conservation biology to further specialize in scientific visualization. Outside of biomedical art, Emerson is an avid birder, photographer, and musician. They have been a member of Rowan's Wind Ensemble since freshman year, performing clarinet and bass clarinet in a variety of ensemble settings.
